Finisher Spotlight: Chad Hesser of Hesser Drywall

Drywall finishing wasn’t always part of Chad Hesser’s plan for himself — in fact, at first, he hated it. But he was still learning the trade little by little, working for some extra money on the side while his kids were still quite young.

Eventually, the monotony of his day job working at a factory became too much for him to bear, and the benefits of drywall finishing were starting to outweigh the negatives. After all, he got to move around and be outside a lot, and no two days were exactly alike. He got to be his own boss — there was no one telling him what to do and when to do it. He got to exercise his creative muscles and challenge himself every day.

The more that drywall finishing made sense to him, as Chad told us, “it just started growing on me.” Years later, business is booming at Chad’s company, Hesser Drywall, where he works on around 40 new-construction houses a year in and around Effingham, Ill., along with plenty of custom work, repairs and remodels.

“There's more of an art to it,” Chad said when we asked why he wound up falling in love with drywall finishing. “I've always been — I don't know, I won't say ‘artsy,’ but I've always been into the arts. Growing up, I was always a drawer, always a painter or something like that.

"Building houses was fun, but at the same time, too, you don't really get to see that finished product. I know finishing drywall is not really a finished, finished product, but that's when the house starts looking like the house. When I walk in and it's just bare walls, it could be anything, but when you start putting drywall up and finishing out all the trim work and stuff like that, to me, that's more interesting. It takes more of a creative edge to really be good at it. It's still challenging every day, no matter how good you get. I think that's what drew me into it more was the challenge and the creativity of it.”

‘I'm still learning stuff all the time’

In the early days of Hesser Drywall, Chad says, he was lucky to get the odd patch job or sub in for another local finisher. Now, he’s got three people working under him and a jam-packed calendar. Why? The same reasons Chad (eventually) became so fond of drywall finishing in the first place: his drive to push and challenge himself, his creativity and his knack for high-quality finishing work.

This kind of commitment to his craft is also what led Chad to using Trim-Tex. From the earliest days of his career, Chad started out using a few of our specialty, decorative beads, allowing him to flex his creativity. Soon enough, Trim-Tex basically became his one-stop-shop for his beads and accessories.

“Not to be biased, but Trim-Tex has been the cornerstone of everything I've known since I started out about 20 years ago,” Chad told us. “It's pretty much everything we use. Corner beads down to off-angles. It's everywhere in the house … That's what the guys used back when I first started. I was just brought into it. Over time, I've used different tool companies. I’ve used different bead companies. The flex beads — like the Fast Edge Roll for all the off-angles — I've used probably four or five different brands of that stuff, and I just keep coming back to the Fast Edge Roll, I made that switch a long time ago.

“But it's just like one of your competitors with regular corner beads: first few times I used them, it's like, put a staple in them, they're chipping away, breaking apart, and they're not durable. You can tell they're made inadequately, I would say, I guess. There's just a huge difference in the quality of products. And, to be honest, I really don't even pay attention to the price because I already know I'm going to buy it anyway.”

And, finally, what would Chad’s advice be to young drywall finishers just starting out on their own, like he did around 20 years ago?

“First and foremost, just don't doubt yourself and then don't compare yourself to anybody else that's a finisher, especially on social media,” he says. “I think a lot of people would probably agree, social media is — to me, it seems like more of a smokescreen. It's for show.

"You don't see everybody's mess-ups. You don't see the hard times. You see everything, and it looks great, looks fun … It's not an easy job. I've been doing it probably almost 20 years now, and I'm still learning stuff all the time.”
