While building his own home, Brian Ward, a Maui resident with no prior drywall experience, turned to Trim-Tex’s wide variety of products to creatively solve an interior finishing dilemma. Ward encountered acoustic problems with the 30’ diameter dome-like structure he built and drywalled in his great room. The echoes were too much for Ward to bear, so he set out to find a solution.
Ward initially thought he would add coffers, which would break up the surface of the dome. After getting started, Ward took his idea a step further. He designed beautiful coffers with two layers of rigid vinyl Trim-Tex Double ⅝" Decorative L Bead. However, Ward ran into a problem. He needed curved Decorative L Bead for the dome.
Ward was going to scrap his idea until he came up with an ambitious solution to the curved bead dilemma. He fashioned five ovens together so he could heat, soften and then bend Trim-Tex layering beads around the multiple forms he constructed. Although Trim-Tex has not tested or designed their products to undergo this process, the method worked for Ward. His ingenuity and creativity allowed Ward to take advantage of the heating and forming properties of rigid vinyl to create a truly stunning design. Ward said he plans to recreate the look with smaller, 10’ diameter domes in each upstairs bedroom.
Ward exclusively uses Trim-Tex products throughout his Hawaii home, including various Decorative L Bead styles, Crown Molding and Step A Bull. He has designed and built many aesthetic features with Trim-Tex products, such as niches and pilasters. After working on his home and gaining invaluable skills, Ward said his new favorite saying is, “There is no substitute for experience.”
