Why Builders Behind This High-Rise Chose Hideaway Expansions

Let's face it: expansion joints are usually a pain in the neck for commercial builders (and many residential ones, too). If they’re not installed every 30 feet or so within a wall partition, cracking will occur. There’s no way around this important code requirement, but you may as well make the process as painless as possible for your installers — and save on labor costs — by choosing easier-to-use, more flexible expansion beads made from vinyl materials.

Trim-Tex offers a few varieties of these crucial drywall accessories, including a standard 093V Expansion bead and its fire rated version. But there’s another option that’s a favorite among builders who don’t want their expansion joints to attract much attention: Hideaway Expansion. We recently visited an impressive new building — the tallest residential high-rise in Milwaukee — whose builders chose this understated bead for all their control/expansion joints. Read on to find out why!

The Problem: ‘Cracks coming all over the place’

“Every 30 feet on walls, you need expansion joint, because buildings move and adjust and flex,” says Mitch Groenke, taper foreman for Common Links, the contractor behind the interiors of the Milwaukee tower. “This keeps the drywall in, and it gives it a place to flex instead of having cracks coming all over the place.”

Each unit of this high-rise — 322 total, plus retail and restaurant spaces — is open-concept in design; with wide, open wall spaces, the average unit would require at least two of these expansion joints. Hallways and common areas, too, would require them, especially on the ceilings. So, with this many expansion joints located all over their building, the project's architects wanted to keep them as subtle as possible — a perfect fit for the subtle Hideaway Expansion bead.

The Solution: Hideaway Expansion beads — ‘You’re good to go!’

Trim-Tex’s expansion beads work like this: they feature two legs of rigid vinyl on either side, which are installed via half-inch staples and 847 Spray Adhesive (or, if you’re moving as fast as Common Links needed to, you can omit the adhesive and double up on staples) and mudded into place. These two mud legs are joined together by a recessed, highly flexible vinyl center, which provides up to 3/8” of controlled movement. This allows the drywall onto which the bead's attached to move along with the structure without cracking.

The key to a control joint is that the flexible flange between sheets of drywall needs to stay flexible in order to stay effective. What they means for the installer is that joint compound cannot get into the bead’s recessed center, as it could make the area more rigid when it hardens. For this reason, there are two of Trim-Tex’s famous tear-off strips located on either side of this area, serving as a protective mask and leaving behind a clean finished edge once removed.

The only difference between the Hideaway Expansion and its more “V”-shaped counterpart, 093V Expansion, is in its aesthetics — with a less recessed center, it creates a stealthier control joint.

“Instead of the metal expansion bead, which is a really deep valley, that Hideaway, it's a shallow valley,” Mitch told us. “It's got that rubber gasket in there and it flexes and it's not as noticeable to the eye when you walk in a room … It works very well. It's easy. It has a little bit of Tear Away on the side — you can mud it, it doesn't fill up with mud in the middle, nothing like that. You just coat it and then sand it, and rip off the Tear Away, and you're good to go!”
